Cowichan Bay
Located on Vancouver Island, about 30 minutes north of Victoria, and 30 minutes south of Nanaimo, Cowichan Bay is located in the Cowichan Valley near the estuary of the Cowichan River when the river meets the Pacific Ocean on it's journey from Cowichan Lake. Originally, the bay was the site of a Hudson's Bay Company fort in the mid 1850's, Cowichan Bay was one of the first European settlements up island from Victoria. The first settlers were drawn to the area because of the easy access offered by Cowichan Bay and the opportunities for fur trapping, farming, fishing and eventually logging.
Cowichan Bay draws its name from the Native language for "a warm, sunny place". Perhaps explaining why the areas wineries produce such a fine product.
Today, about 2,500 people live in the Cowichan Valley and a number of excellent artisans and crafters make their home in the charming Village of Cowichan Bay. Visitor enjoy coastal eco-tourism and outdoor adventuring. Deserted beaches, lush vineyards and the easy going West Coast lifestyle make this a great vacation destination.
